The Initiative provides annual core operational grants to 21 established, high-performing CDCs in rural areas, small towns and major cities, project lending, strategic issue management and project development assistance to the CDC industry statewide. Foundations, government, corporations, and others have invested in the Initiative and through it, in the future of North Carolina. The Initiative leverages these investments and appropriations to attract millions of dollars of additional private sector investment.
Creating Assets and Wealth in Low-Resource Communities.
The work of funded CDCs is making a difference: commercial real estate development, business and enterprise development, capital formation, affordable housing, and growth in local tax bases-not to mention improved lives that have become more productive, communities that are safer and more attractive, and children who have a better chance. Since our founding in 1994, the North Carolina Community Development Initiative has channeled more than $43 million to local Community Development Corporations, resulting in more than $251 million of completed local development projects.
The results of this unique partnership are evident:
- $3.9 million in new real estate taxes
- $75.4 million of new single family mortgages
- 1,802 new single family homes
- 4,906 full time jobs created
- 490,393 square feet of commercial - office, retail and industrial - real estate
Programs that Make a Difference
Our mission is to enable the local CDCs not only to make a difference in economic development, capital formation, affordable housing, and growth in local tax bases - but improved lives that have become more productive, communities that are safer and more attractive, and children who have a better chance.
Our programs include annual core operational grants to high-performing CDCs in rural areas, small towns, and major cities; project lending through our lending subsidiary; North Carolina Community Development Initiative Capital, Inc; as well as strategic issue management and project development assistance to the CDC industry statewide.
