NCDC Developing Child Care
Currently operating two child care centers in Camden County and one in Currituck County, Northeastern CDC (NCDC) daily provides a safe and nurturing environment for more than 275 children. Through programs that foster social, emotional, physical and educational growth, NCDC is dedicated to enhancing the quality of child development in North Carolina. And all the while they are generating revenue back to their bottom line.
Building on their success, NCDC has recently established a partnership that will expand their child care operations into Elizabeth City. Maria Garcia, Executive Director of NCDC, is thrilled by the possibilities. “We really are excited. As a nonprofit, this is the first time a [for-profit] developer hasapproached us to do a development.”
Secured by a land acquisition loan from Initiative Capital, the 1.65 acre site will house a brand new 12,000 sq ft facility called the Northeast Center for Development of Children, which is scheduled to open in May of next year. Asan anchor tenant in The Shops at Tanglewood Parkway, thecenter will attractbusinessesas well as employees with convenient, affordable daycare. “[The developer] realized that child care is an economic development tool andgave us the land at below market rate,” Ms. Garcia said. “He really wants us out there.”
With this major project underway, NCDC is already plotting their next
steps. Plans are currently in place to create a Model Learning Center that will encompass quality child care, family education, strengthening the social support infrastructure and providing professional workforce development. The center will encourage parents to take an active role in all aspects of their children’s development, helping NCDC build community one family at a time. |
