In September 1999 Hurricane Floyd struck North Carolina. Although only category 2 in intensity it's large size was a greater problem than its winds, as the heavy rainfall covered a larger area and lasted longer than with a typical category 2 hurricane. The Tar River crested 24 feet above flood stage.
When the storm had passed there were 51 deaths; 7000 homes destroyed; 17,000 homes uninhabitable; 56,000 homes damaged; throughout eastern North Carolina
The State asked the Initiative to administer $12.5 million dollars, of the $836 million Hurricane Floyd Recovery Bill, to be used by non-profit housing developers to rebuild affordable housing in eastern North Carolina. We are proud of the disaster recovery work done by local Community Development Corporations and other agencies.
