Carolina Steel introduces innovative green building product

AUG. 30, 2011 - Carolina Steel Solutions, a socially responsible building products manufacturing company co-owned by UDI Community Development Corp. and the Initiative, aims to revolutionize the building industry with a new product that is green, energy efficient and resistant to damage of virtually any kind.

Tavacore is a versatile steel and foam panel system made from sustainable materials that is stronger, lighter and more efficient than wood and costs less to build and own.

“When you compare the total costs of Tavacore to traditional building materials, like wood or concrete, we’re about 10 percent less expensive,” said Carolina Steel CEO Alan Freuler. “Equally important, the long-term cost of ownership of a property built using Tavacore is far less, too. Our energy efficient panels can reduce heating and cooling costs by as much as 50 percent.”

That makes Tavacore particularly beneficial for homes and businesses built by community economic development organizations, Freuler said.

Tavacore is engineered and custom manufactured for each job in the company’s facility in DurhamN.C. The panels can be used for projects of all shapes and sizes, from 800-square-foot-starter homes to multi-story commercial structures.  Carolina Steel also helps builders transition to recycled steel, a material that is safer, stronger and more sustainable than wood.

Carolina Steel Solutions (formerly Carolina Steel Construction) changed its name this summer to better reflect its product line and is under new management. Alan Freuler leads the company as chief executive officer. Monica McCoy is operations manager.
