AT&T and PNC invest in Initiative’s leadership development programs

June 9, 2023 - AT&T Foundation and PNC Foundation have each awarded grants to the N.C. Community Development Initiative to provide leadership development training to high school students and community economic development practitioners across the state.

The $25,000 AT&T Foundation grant supports the Initiative’s 2014 Summer Youth Leadership Program, which started June 16. The program, launched in 2008, aims to develop the next generation of North Carolina leaders through an intensive eight-week internship with a community development organization in the student’s home town. Students come together in Raleigh four times for leadership training sessions and peer-to-peer learning.

“We are grateful to have AT&T’s support for the Summer Youth Leadership Program in our seventh year,” said Kimberly Askew, program coordinator. “This program gives teens the chance to gain confidence, learn workplace and life skills, and grow as leaders. We are so excited to see what the 2014 participants will achieve over the course of the summer.”

The $40,000 PNC Foundation grant will support the Initiative’s community economic development leadership trainings. These trainings provide opportunities for current and rising leaders of Initiative partner organizations to gain the organizational and technical skills needed to create jobs and spark sustainable economic growth in limited-income communities across the state.

“This grant from PNC will provide growth opportunities for many of North Carolina’s promising leaders and their organizations, and help us strengthen our state’s community economic development network,” said Meena Ahuja, senior program officer. “Our leadership trainings are designed with the needs of our partner organizations in mind, and provide them with access to experts in the field as well as chances to learn from their peers.”
